Today is TutuandHHDLDesmond Tutu’s birthday! This is one of my favorite pictures from Seeds of Compassion, the project I worked on with the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. These two spiritual souls laughed so much when they were together. Like dear old friends, they knew the secret to love. They didn’t label each other as ‘wrong’ simply because they had different ways of expressing their spirituality in the world. Instead, they were openly curious, looked for the commonalities in their religions, learned from each other and then laughed at their innate silly humanness – like why Tutu wears a pink robe and the Dalai Lama wears a maroon dress!

If only those of us who didn’t wear robes could learn from that simple formula: Love unconditionally, get genuinely curious about our brothers’ & sisters’ beliefs, celebrate the commonalities, and laugh our way home to our respective houses of worship, if we even have one.

Blessings to you on your birthday, Desmond Tutu. Thank you for bringing your light and humor to the world and for showing us what ‘spirituality’ and brotherhood can really look like.

Love,

Emily
